Primary Schools Cross Country 2022
Renmore once again saw the budding athletic talent that springs from Lurga National School. The Junior Girls, Boys and Senior Girls and Boys all had to do qualifying races in Lurga in order to secure their place representing Lurga at the hugely popular annual primary schools cross country. Well done to everyone in 3rd and 4th who all took part in the qualifying rounds.
On the day the Junior Girls we the first off the line, 150 girls lined up and when the gun fired, they took off like bolts of lighting. Roisín Fogarty finished an outstanding 5th in the West Division, with Ciara McGuane close behind her in 9th. Holly O'Connor just recovering from a foot injury finished an amazing 16th with the fourth member of the team Elena Giblin finishing 62nd to secure a bronze for the Junior Girls Team. These 4 girls along with their two fantastic other team mates Jessica Loughnane (93rd) and Aisling Stanford (105th) will now represent Lurga again next Tuesday in Renmore for the Primary Schools Galway Final. Massive congratulations to all the girls and to their teacher Mr Nolan who helped get these athletes ready.
To add some excitement to the day Dean and Dylan Casey former Lurga students turned up to be part of this great event. The Casey's started their running in Renmore representing Lurga a few years ago.
The Junior Boys consisted of Kevin Souza first to finish in 55th, followed by Alex Lee 66th, Luke Foster 83rd, Jack Keaveney 91st, and Cillian Byrne 103rd gave a great performance. It was a first time event for these boys and in a field of 180 boys they did Lurga proud. Roll on next year where they will only have learned from their experience.

3rd class & 4th class
Welcome to our 3rd class and 4th class room.
Children in 3rd class and 4th class have been working hard learning about The Stone Age, Fionn and the Fianna and Food and Farming in History, aeroplanes and helicopters in Science and life in urban areas and buildings in Geography. We also had the opportunity to use iPads, courtesy of the Clare Education Centre, to help improve our numeracy and literacy skills, which was great fun. |

In our classroom we love to work hard and have fun doing Visual Arts, Music and PE. Like all the children in Lurga National School, the children in 3rd and 4th are enjoying their swimming lessons in Ennis Pool.
School Tour 2019For this year’s tour, 3rd and 4th class, travelled to county Clare to visit Craggaunowen and afterwards Shannon Leisure Centre. As part of our visit to Craggaunowen we travelled back in time to learn what life was like in Ireland during The Bronze Age. We got to spend time on a crannóg, construct a wattle and daub wall, visit a fulacht fiadh, walk on an ancient trackway, take part in an early court sentencing and wear warrior war paint. In Shannon we particularly enjoyed our time on the climbing wall there.

This year as part of our novel work in English we have been reading The Giggler Treatment from Irish author Roddy Doyle and Kensuke’s Kingdom from English author Michael Morpurgo. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading both books and studying the style of writing from both authors. We have also been using the school laptops to write our book reviews.

our Family ArtefactsWe recently worked on a project as part of SESE History. We sourced and researched information on special artefacts from our families history. These were various items which in some way linked us back to our ancestors. We were delighted to then get the opportunity to exhibit our projects to everyone in Lurga National School on Grandparent's Day.

Card SharksWe have been learning some new card games as part of the topic of chance in maths. Currently we are really skilled at playing Snap and Aces Wild.

Bricí SpraoiThanks to Bricí Spraoi for letting us have the opportunity to work on our imaginative, construction, problem-solving and team-work skills, through play with their Bricí. It was so much fun and we also got to work on our expressive oral language skills too.

Meeting our Connacht Heroes! Thanks to Gort Rugby Club for hosting our Lurga children as well as 300 other children from schools in the locality. We really enjoyed playing touch rugby matches alongside our Connacht heroes.

Numeracy & Literacy with IPadsThis year Lurga NS was offered the opportunity to use 16 iPads for a three week period, courtesy of the Clare Education Centre. We in 3rd and 4th really enjoyed the chance to try out some of the latest apps to help develop our numeracy and literacy skills. We would like to say a big thank you to the Clare Education Centre for this amazing opportunity.

Norman Castles and Motte and Baileys
We really enjoyed learning about Motte and Baileys and then Norman Castles. Both topics were of such interest to us that we decided to see if we could make them ourselves! Thanks to all at home who helped us create our own strongholds.
School TourAfter learning all about The Normans it only seemed right that we should visit Athenry Castle, to see a great example of a castle which dates back to the 13th century. After we visited the castle we then paid a visit to Athenry Heritage Centre, where we got the chance to practise archery, dress up in medieval costume and take part in a medieval drama. Finally we bounced into Jump Lanes Galway.

My ArtefactWe learned about our own history by talking to our parents about any personal artefacts we have at home from when we were younger. We brought our artefacts to school and told the story behind each artefact. As a class we then investigated and discussed what we could discover about each artefact. We looked for clues as to how old each artefact was, whether they were used regularly and how they were stored. Here are a selection of some of our artefacts:

Lurga NS School Tour 2015
Due to the nature of the current size of Lurga NS, this year the middle room were split in two for their tours. Our 1st class went on Mrs Fogarty's Tour to Toroe Pet Farm and our 2nd class went on the Lurga NS Senior Tour to Athlone. Please read below some of our accounts of the day. For more photos of our tours please go to the Junior and Senior Room pages.
We went on a bus to Turoe Pet Farm. When we got there we had a little snack. Then we went into a place called “Jungle Town”. We then went to feed some animals. My favourite animal was the Peacock, because it took three steps and then spread out its colourful feathers. After we fed the animals we went into a big prk. I loved the climbing frame. We had a small break, then we went into a place called “Inflatable City”. When we came out we went straight back in again because we were so, so, so good! After that we went to the bus and came home. It was a great school tour. – Doireann.

We had lots of fun on our tour at the Hodson Bay Sports Centre in Athlone. We went on a go-kart and made a puzzle. We had toasted marshmallows. We then went kayaking. When we jumped out of the kayak it was freezing. We then ate our lunch and it was really nice. After lunch we rowed in a Dragon Boat. I beat a bongo drum and my friends did the rowing! We then did pier jumping. We also rowed in a currach and on a raft. The last thing was a trip in a boat to a huge inflated area where we jumped, bounced and plunged into the water. We had a great day. - Kara

Sacraments 2015Congratulations to Beibheann, James, Evan, Conor, Kila, Kara, Barry, Leah and Jamie who made their First Confession on Wednesday March 25th in Shanaglish Church with Fr Tommy Marrinan. They all went on to receive their First Holy Communion on Saturday May 23rd with Fr Gearóid Ó Gríofa. The children were excellent and the choir, made up of Lurga NS children from other classes, was beautiful on the day. Our thanks to Olive Veale for organising the parish-lead, “Do this In Memory of Me”, Programme.

Competition Time! All of us in Mrs Lundon Scanlon’s Middle Room entered the 2015 An Post Handwriting Competition. It was slow careful work – making sure that we did our best from the beginning to the end of the piece we wrote. We didn’t have a winner this year but it was fun to take part.
During one of our Visual Arts lessons we each designed and made a bookmark. The completed bookmarks were then entered in a national competition run by a yoghurt company. We each received a certificate of participation and vouchers for our efforts.
We also entered a local art competition. It was in Beagh Community Centre. The theme was “Community”. Our winners were Doireann, Niamh, Philip and Kara. A huge congratulations to all who entered.
